A
full scale replica of the "Amarica's Cup" winning yacht Australia II graced
the entrance to the Australia Pavilion. The pavilion could also be
identified from the waterfront by large neon kangaroos.
Inside, the exhibits gave visitors a series of "Australian Experiences" designed not only to entertain and inform but also to create an illusion of involvement. This was achieved by the imaginative use of multi-screen slide programs, large video screens, theatrical lighting and computerized sound.
After
walking past a replica of Australia's newest communication satellite (AUSSAT),
visitors then entered a darkened cavern. White mist floated and eucalyptus
perfumed the air as images of the mythic Aboriginal Dreamtime appeared.
Against the haunting sounds of chanting, Aboriginal cave paintings glowed
on and off.
Outside the cavern,
Actor Mel Gibson appeared on video to introduce several films that presented
the history and culture of Australia.
