Japan

The "Changing Appearance of Transportation" was the theme of Japan's pavilion.  Guided by this idea, the pavilion showed how transportation has progressed as an aspect of our human development.

2) The HSST zooming past Expo's largest sculpture -- Highway 86.
3 & 4) Diorama of Japan's City of the Future.

The pavilion was a visual expression of how transportation technology enhances culture and public welfare in Japan and how such technology can contribute to the advancement of civilization and world culture in general.

The visitor could "take a ride to tomorrow" aboard the 450-metre demonstration track HSST (High Speed Surface Transport) and view a 1000- square-metre diorama of a futuristic city.  The HSST passenger train floated on electro-magnetic modules, elevating the train on a cushion of air and providing a safe and efficient solution to the problem of moving a high volume of passengers quickly, economically, and cleanly.  The train's top speeds have been clocked at 300 kilometres per hour, but for the fair, a limited section of track only allowed a 40 km/h ride.
