International Children's Day
June 1st, 1986

You didn't have to be a child to enjoy the imaginative performances produced by or especially for children.  On International Children's Day the children were in charge.  It was their turn to show the world their capabilities and voice their opinions.  But most of all, they were there to have fun.

There were serious moments such as childrens' pleas to end war, famine and dissease.  And there were reminders that many children living in the world of 1986 had their childhood cut short or experienced no childhood at all.

But it wasn't all serious.  International performances specifically geared to children's tastes were showcased throughout the day.  Some of the best acrobats, magicians, puppeteers, jugglers, clowns, and domestic animal acts from around the world entertained throughout the day.

Danny Kaye at International Children's Day

Was there anyone better suited to make an appearance on International Children's Day than the world's oldest kid?  Known for his roles in such Hollywood films as "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "Hans Christian Aanderson,"  Danny Kay was the United Nation's UNICEF Ambassador at the time.  Considered the highlight of the day for many people, he showed his audience that he could still spin a yarn and stretch his imagination as well as any child.
